Description of the trail

Hiking through this trail needs to be started early in the morning during summer time, because it is a very long and it is on a very high altitudes. The walk starts from the village of Brod at the 1400 m altitude in the northwest of the village and continues for 2 hours of climbing up to the old passage and to the cross-border plain. The trail continues to the north until the Peak on 2400 m/asl. It approaches the white lake where you need to avoid the peak moving on the same elevation that you are, straight left. Along this trail one can see the villages of Gora and Opoja in the Dragash / Dragaš Municipality, but also on the right side one can find the wildest Shar Mountain islands on the Macedonian side. The trail continues to Skarpa 2474 m/asl from where one can have a very good view of the most beautiful lakes (small lake and Karanikolichko Lake or Golem Gjol). The mid part of the trail is rocky and dry during the summer and requires bringing more water during the journey.

Before darkness, one has to continue on a steep slope and stay on the wide off-road path that goes directly to the black stone and the Struzhe village. There are wooden cabins where hikers can stay at night or can go camping.

The last stage of the trail is open and wide.  During the summer the area provides an opportunity for seeing many different flowers and herbs, and also few sheep folks (Note: there are dogs around sheep folks, so avoid the direction of the sheep’s and dogs). Along the trail the visitors can see perfect flora and fauna and if lucky also one can see in a distance some wild animals, mostly “Chamois” – wild goat and golden eagle.
